Thermal Imaging of Switchboards
Why thermal imaging?
- It is a cost saving measure
- It is a preventative measure
- It can detect possible future electrical fires
- It can detect possible future power outages
- Insurers often require thermal imaging reports
- It is a non destructive measure
- Ensure the electrical health of your buildings
- Ensure the safety of your tenants, staff or residents.
What is Thermal Imaging?
Thermal Imaging is also referred to as thermoscanning, thermography, thermal scanning, infrared scanning and infrared thermography.
Basically, if there is a fault in a switchboard, more heat will be generated. This could be due to several reasons including a loose terminal, faulty circuit breakers, incorrectly sized cables or incorrectly placed components. Thermal Imaging is the practice of capturing images of heat, unable to be seen by the naked eye, using an infrared camera. Images are created by the camera, and are interpreted by a trained electrician, in relation to the ambient temperature. If there is a hot spot the image generated will show a lighter colour. Darker colours indicate lower temperatures.
You will be provided with a full report, together with any recommendations for preventative works if problems are detected.
Is there anything else I should know about thermal imaging?
- It should be undertaken once every 12 months
- You don't need to shutdown power to your site or building at any time during thermal imaging.
Call DJD Electrics on 03 8819 1596 to perform thermal imaging on your building's switchboard.
