Electric Vehicle Chargers
Thinking about buying an electric car in Australia?
Making the switch to an electric car has benefits. They are cheap to run, with virtually no servicing costs or eye watering petrol prices. Not to mention zero carbon emissions.
However, one of the cons is considerable- charging your vehicle takes much longer than filling up at the petrol station. So what are your options?
There are three charging speeds for EVs, known as 'Levels'.
Level 1 - Slow - delivers 2kW per hour
Electric cars can be charged from a normal home power point, already installed in your house.
It takes around 20 hours to charge a 40kw battery, and 37 hours for a 75kw battery.
Before going ahead and plugging your car in, it is best to check that your wiring can handle the extra load, and that a circuit can be assigned for charging your car.
Level 2 - Medium - 7kW per hour single-phase connection, or 22kW per hour with a three-phase connection
In order to speed these times up considerably you can have an electrician install a 7kw single phase connection.
This will reduce charging times to 5.5 hours for a 40kw battery and 10.5 hours for a 75kw battery.
Similarly, you can have an electrician install a three phase connection, and times will be three times faster than for the single phase.
Level 3 - Fast - delivers 50kW-350kW per hour
These are the high voltage fast chargers found at public charging stations. So far there are 2500 in Australia, and increasing.
You can charge your car in less than 30 minutes.
If you want one of these at home it will set you back around $25000, so this is not an option for most people.
